THE OFFERING
This is an opportunity to think more deeply about the people we serve, the systems they’ve been part of, and how we approach their care.
MILITARY CULTURE AND CLINICAL WORK
More than combat trauma and PTSD
Military culture, identity, loyalty, relationships, cumulative experiences, and the transition between military and civilian life can all influence how clients experience themselves, their relationships, and the therapeutic process.
This consultation is for EMDR-trained mental health professionals working with people who currently serve or have served in the military, including active-duty personnel, veterans, National Guard members, Reservists, and individuals who have served in other military capacities.
We’ll explore EMDR case conceptualization, preparation, target selection, sequencing, dissociation, protective adaptations, and clinical decision-making when treatment becomes complicated.
The conversation may also include military sexual trauma, moral injury, attachment experiences, institutional dynamics, and the impact of military service on relationships and identity.
STRUCTURE
How the 90 minutes are used
- Brief clinical framing and discussion of military culture
- Participant questions and de-identified case consultation
- EMDR case conceptualization and treatment considerations
- Clinical discussion and practical takeaways
Individual case review is not guaranteed for every participant. Participants are welcome to bring a question or a de-identified case to the group discussion.
WHAT WE CAN WORK THROUGH
Bring the case you keep thinking about.
Maybe processing keeps stopping. You’re not sure what to target, or whether your client is ready. Maybe you leave a session thinking, “Something else is happening here, and I can’t quite put my finger on it.”
That’s what we can work through together.
I’m interested in what you’re seeing in the room, what you’ve tried, and what happens when you get close to the work. We can look at preparation, dissociation, parts, target selection, or where an earlier experience may be showing up in the present.
I’m also an Army veteran. With military-connected clients, I pay attention to what clinicians can miss when they don’t know the culture. What looks like resistance may deserve another question. So may loyalty, silence, responsibility, or the fear of what saying something out loud could cost.
You don’t need to bring a perfectly organized case. Tell me where you’re stuck. We’ll start there.
